5 Signs It's Time to Remodel Your Bathroom

How to tell the difference between a bathroom that looks dated and one that is actually failing.

Updated bathroom with tiled walls and a glass shower door

A dated bathroom is an aesthetic problem you can live with. A failing one is a structural problem that gets more expensive every month you leave it. These are the signs worth acting on.

1. Soft spots or movement in the floor

Any give underfoot, particularly near the toilet or the shower, suggests water has been getting into the subfloor for some time. This is the one to stop reading and call someone about.

2. Grout and caulk that will not stay clean

If you have regrouted the same shower more than once, the problem is not the grout. It is almost always the waterproofing behind it, and no amount of surface work fixes that.

3. Persistent smell or visible mould

In a humid climate, a bathroom that smells damp after being aired out is telling you moisture is sitting somewhere it should not. Often the extraction is undersized, vents into the attic, or was never connected at all.

4. A tub nobody uses

Not a failure, but a waste. If the tub in the primary or main bathroom has not been used in a year, converting it to a walk-in shower reclaims real floor area and makes the room considerably safer to step into.

5. You are planning to stay put

If the house is your long-term home, a bathroom designed for how you will use it in fifteen years, with a low threshold, good lighting and grab bars designed in rather than added later, is worth doing while it is a choice rather than a necessity.

What to do next

Signs one through three mean getting someone to look behind the tile sooner rather than later. Four and five are about timing and budget. Either way, a free in-home assessment will tell you which category you are in before you commit to anything.
